Kyushu’s Modern Luxury: The Ritz-Carlton Fukuoka

For those looking for something a little different when it comes to Japan’s major cities, you might include Fukuoka on your Japan itinerary. You’ll be met with a culmination of some of Japan’s best bits merged into one: the nightlife buzz of Osaka, the convenience of Tokyo, and the exquisite food of Sapporo are just some of the reasons to visit ‘The Gateway to Asia’. In June 2023, The Ritz-Carlton Fukuoka opened its doors - the latest offering to its portfolio, and yet another reason to include the city of Fukuoka on your next itinerary. It’s the first luxury hotel of its kind on the island of Kyushu, and effortlessly exudes a sense of low-key luxury, perfect for your next treat, special occasion or family adventure.

The Offer

Stepping past the crimson ocha entrance screens designed by Motoko Maio, you’ll be presented with a number of common areas, many of which play host to traditional koishiware ceramic pieces and other local crafts. The soft lighting and warm tones combined with a meticulously designed interior by Strickland (the same as The Ritz-Carlton Nikko) help preserve this hotel’s oasis-like feel, a subtle nod to the rich cultural and historical heritage of the area.

Each of Ritz Carlton’s 147 kimono-inspired rooms and 20 corner suites feature playful references to the local arts of lacquered woven bamboo and Haakata-ori textiles - similar, and numerous, artisanal touches that are frequently observed across each of the 9 floors by those that have a keen eye for design.

Not only is The Ritz-Carlton Fukuoka the epitome of refined luxury when it comes to style, but its three main restaurants (Genjyu, Viridis, and Diva) ensure it stays at the forefront of Fukuoka’s (and Japan’s) food scene. Expect Japanese classics like Wagyu beef from Iki Island and seafood from the Genkai Sea, both served on Arita ceramics.

The Ritz Carlton's allure for many lies in its devotion to local art, whether that’s the piece of calligraphy work by Fukuoka-based artist Shofu Koyama that greets guests in The Ritz Carlton Suite, or the Traditional Fukuoka craft of Kurume Kasuri on show in the elevator halls. This connection is solidified by Hakata Bay's historical importance along the Silk Road trade route, subtly echoed in each of the hotel's intricately crafted spaces.

The Location

Occupying the top 7 floors of a grand glass tower designed by Tokyo-based design studio ‘Kume Sekkei’, Ritz-Carlton is perched in the very heart of Downtown Fukuoka. Just a short stroll from central Hakata Station, you’ll be perfectly positioned to explore the city's cultural treasures, which include places like Ohori Park and Tochoji Temple - the oldest Shingon temple on the island of Kyushu.

Indulge in Fukuoka's famous Tonkotsu Ramen mere steps away at one of the many yatai in Tenjin, and savour freshly baked goods from the onsite Diva Café. Complete your day with a zen spa treatment on the 24th floor, overlooking the city skyline.

Who is it For?

The Ritz-Carlton Fukuoka welcomes travel connoisseurs looking for a home away from home, and an understated luxury sanctuary amongst the hustle of downtown Fukuoka. With its unwavering commitment to showcasing local arts and design, the hotel offers an unmatched experience for those intrigued by the city's cultural nuances. It's immaculate design and impeccable service may come with a higher price tag, but the quality and attention to detail around every corner ensure an unforgettable experience for couples, families, or solo travellers looking for high-end luxury and a deeper insight into the local culture.

Sustainability

While the luxury of Ritz Carlton Resorts is legendary, they don’t miss a beat when it comes to sustainability either.

Each of the hotel’s four restaurants provides nothing but fresh, locally sourced traditional food such as kaiseki, sushi, and teppanyaki. Soon, guests will have the unique opportunity to accompany the chefs to the fish markets at 3 am, providing an unprecedented connection to Fukuoka's food culture.

In the bathrooms, you'll discover a thoughtful array of amenities crafted with sustainability in mind. From bamboo combs and toothbrushes, to natural loofah sponges and cotton swabs, each item is eco-friendly. Setting itself apart from conventional practices, the hotel ensures that used products are collected, returned, and recycled into new ones. This reduces waste and leads the way in eco-friendly hotel processes.
